RUGS FROM INDIA
The Indian rug industry is believed to
have originated in the 16th century when
the Mughal emperor Akbar invited some
Persian carpet weavers to set up a workshop
in his palace. These weavers introduced
the art of pile carpet weaving in silk
and wool. Akbar's successor, Jahangir
and later Shah Jahan, further encouraged
the development of this craft. During
Shah Jahan's reign, Indian carpets became
famous in several countries.
India is the number one country exporting
rugs to the United States and Europe.
Indian rugs offer quality and colors,
particularly during the last 20 years.
Newly developed hand knotted 10x10 quality
carpets & rugs (100 knots per sq.
Inch) made from hand spun, high twist/hard
twist, ghazani wool have great sheen &
saturated colors with a very open design.
Some rugs are woven with 100% New-Zealand
wool which adds luster and life to a rug.
These rugs come in a variety of colors
and patterns. Indian rugs are also made
in a higher quality like 10/14, 12/12
or 14/14 with some beautiful colors and
designs that can add warmth to a room,
enhance the decor and provide a design
focal point.
Kashmir is known for its fine quality
carpets—an average piece is made
with about 324 knots per square inch.
Although the carpet industry in Kashmir
is of Persian origin, Kashmir has developed
some of its own designs based on shawl
patterns—the traditional paisley,
leaves and flowers.
Fine quality carpets are also produced
in Jaipeu, Agra, Mirzapur, Varanasi and
Bhadohi. The Mirzapur-Bhadohi belt in
Uttar Pradesh represents the most important
area of carpet weaving in India as it
has the largest concentration of carpet
weavers. This area specializes in the
lower, medium and low-fine qualities and
accounts for nearly 90 per cent of the
total production of rugs in India. The
quality ranges between 100 and 200 knots
per square inch.
