RUGS FROM PAKISTAN
Pakistan is one of the world's leading exporters
of hand-made rugs. Since 1947, weaving flourished
in Pakistan when Indian Muslims immigrated to
this country. The Persian empire had a major
influence on Pakistan carpet designs. By the
16th and 17th centuries, the Iranian government
set up royal rug manufacturing facilities in
Pakistan, resulting in massive growth of rug
weaving. Rugs from this region are commonly
called Pak-Persian.
Pakistan rugs are highly valued for their excellence
in craftsmanship, knotting quality and perfect
finish. Today's styles and patterns of Pakistan's
rugs follow famous Persian designs or Turkoman
and Caucasian (Bokhara) designs. The most famous
designs and quality from Pakistan are Peshawar
and Pak Persian 16/18 quality. These rugs have
vivid colors and an antique wash; they are in
high demand in the United States and European
countries. Colors are primarily cream, beige
and camel.
Pak-Persian rugs use both hand spun yarn and
machine twisted yarn. They are woven from wool
and silk. Natural vegetable dyes are largely
used in Pak-Persian 16/18 quality. A wide range
of knotting densities starting from 100 to 300
knots per square inch and more are offered.
